The Milieuthermometer Zorg is the official sustainability certification for healthcare institutions in the Netherlands. It evaluates organizations based on 15 themes and 122 requirements, such as energy, waste, transportation, and procurement. There are three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.
The Milieuthermometer Zorg is intended for both medical and social care settings: hospitals, nursing homes, facilities for people with disabilities, and mental health care institutions. Hundreds of healthcare organizations have already been certified.
The MTZ helps healthcare organizations operate in a demonstrably sustainable manner. In addition, it is becoming increasingly important due to requirements from health insurers, competitive bidding processes, the Green Deal for Healthcare, and upcoming legislation such as the CSRD.
An MTZ certificate demonstrates that your organization operates sustainably. This can lead to cost savings (such as on energy), a stronger reputation, advantages in bidding processes and financing, and better alignment with health insurance providers’ requirements.
Bronze is the basic level, at which you comply with legislation and take a few additional measures. Silver requires structural sustainability efforts and is often mandated by insurers and municipalities. Gold is for frontrunners who have fully integrated sustainability into their organization.
With SureSync Milieuthermometer, you can digitize the entire MTZ process. You automate data collection, centrally manage all requirements, and gain real-time insight into your performance. This ensures you’re always prepared for audits and eliminates manual work.
The Milieuthermometer Zorg (MTZ) is recognized by the ministry as an alternative means of fulfilling the EED audit requirement. If the certification applies to the entire organization, a separate EED audit report no longer needs to be submitted to RVO. Instead, the MTZ certificate serves as proof that the audit requirement has been met.
For organizations that are only partially certified, the EED audit requirement remains in effect for the remaining parts of the organization.
